MECHANICS, HYDRAULICS, AND TOOLING TRAINING
The video is about the Community Trade Hubs mechanical center in Leven, which supports secondary provision in Fife, primarily by giving students the chance to learn vocational skills in mechanics. The center covers various areas of mechanics, such as working on:
- Greenkeeping industry mowers
- Quad bikes
- Go-karts
- Engine component parts for the construction industry, including cement mixers and whacker plates
Students learn how to maintain, service, strip down, and rebuild these engines, as well as work with hand tools and industry equipment. The main goal is to “spark an interest and and gain engagement”.
The center also features:
- A “dyno machine” to check if an engine is working to its “full power”. If not, the students work on fault-finding and making sure the machine is running at its fullest power.
- Cleaning equipment and machinery to teach students the importance of keeping their tools “clean and tidy”.
- Work on two-stroke and four-stroke karts.
- Training in hydraulics, which is part of greenkeeping, to create a pathway into industries that use hydraulics, such as oil and gas. The speaker emphasizes that this early training is essential for developing a skilled workforce.
- Quad bikes, which are used to keep the 10-week or 20-week program “attractive” and teach kids responsibility, communication, and safety.
A new program, initially called “Fife Kart Club” and soon to be the “Scottish Kart Academy,” has been created to offer local kids the chance to move from the mainstream mechanics program into the Kart Club. This section is geared toward race team equipment. The club races seven karts with 400cc four-stroke engines. The project is a club where families, including grandparents, aunts, uncles, mothers, and fathers, support the kids in areas such as digital skills, social media, video editing, driver skills, and track tuition. The club is also planning to participate in the British CRA next year, giving the kids the opportunity to be on TV.
The video includes an interview with a student who has been at the center for two weeks and is enjoying learning “all sorts of new things”. The student states he wants to be a mechanic.
